ChatGPT Business: Definition
ChatGPT Business is OpenAI's plan for small-to-mid-market teams, priced per user, including access to Workspace Agents, shared projects, and basic admin controls.
Longer definition
ChatGPT Business (formerly branded as ChatGPT Team in some materials) sits between consumer ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise. It includes the same Workspace Agents capabilities as Enterprise, with lighter governance: limited SSO, shorter audit log retention, standard DPA terms, US-default data residency. For most US SMBs under 100 seats, Business is sufficient. Enterprise is the right upgrade when governance (SSO, SCIM, custom DPA, 90+ day audit) becomes a requirement.
In practice
Business is billed per user on a monthly or annual plan. Workspace Agents run on the Business tenant the same way they run on Enterprise: same connectors, same authoring, same runtime. What differs is the admin and compliance layer around them.
Common mistakes
- Upgrading to Enterprise before you need the governance features, which is expensive and often unnecessary for 30-person teams
- Assuming Plus includes Workspace Agents. It doesn't; Plus is consumer-tier, Workspace Agents are team-tier
- Not assigning admin roles explicitly. Defaults are liberal and agents can be built by anyone on the tenant
